Create Winning Advertisements

Creating a winning advertisement is a challenge, no matter what medium you are writing for, whether it is online or print.
Irrespective of the subject matter, when creating copy for an advertisement or even writing an article, you are presenting information to an audience. You want to engage and generate a response to what has been written, whether it is positive (or negative). You want the intended audience to respond in some form.
Initial impact is paramount - at first glance, you want your ad to draw the reader’s undivided attention. It could be a bold heading or a provocative image for example. The use of design layout, colour (or lack of) and imagery can play a crucial role in initially attracting the reader.
Other things to consider when creating advertisements include:
- You want to inspire so keep the words succinct. Advertisements are only effective, when one reads it, and understands what is being written. Fonts and their colour, size and readability are also essential in conveying a message and its importance or vitality.
- Make sure your advertisement is directed towards your target audience rather than yourself.
b) Is it easy to read?
c) Are the images you’re using communicating your intended message? If not, then you need to reconsider the look and feel of your advertisement.
d) Make sure there are no spelling errors in your advertisement unless of course, they are intended! There is nothing more embarrassing than having a great looking ad with unintended spelling errors.
e) Last but not least, what is the call of action? How do you want your target audience to respond to your advertisement? Whatever it is, make sure the contact information is correct.
Great advertisements are those that stay in your mind and cause your target audience to react to your desired call of action.
